Kyrenia is the jewel in the crown of North Cyprus, a thriving coastal town with a historic heart centered around its  harbour. A holiday in Kyrenia is ideal for those who love good restaurants, friendly harbour-side cafes, interesting shopping, and history as well as  easy access to golden sandy beaches and forest-clad mountains.

Luxury hotels, powerful construction companies, luxury Cyprus housing projects in Kyrenia  are always the first in raising the bar of quality  in the TRNC.

Due to the increase in the number of universities recently, the structure and dynamics of the city are rapidly evolving.

The Mediterranean embraces the North of Kyrenia. The Toros Mountains in Turkey are visible across the sea unobstructedly during clear weather conditions.

The Five Finger Mountain chain surrounds the south.

Just as Nicosia is the center of the business world, undoubtedly Kyrenia is the center of living. The higher income population of the TRNC prefers to live in Kyrenia.

With Esentepe to the east and Lapta beaches to the west, Kyrenia is also a favorite of tourists who are fond of history and nature.

The Five Finger Mountains, the Bufavento Castle and St. Hillarion Castle are outstanding places to visit.

Kyrenia Harbour is also among the most frequented places by tourists.

British, Scandinavian and Russian investors as well as Turkish investors are important figures of the real estate market in Kyrenia in recent years.

The preffered place of investment for Turkish buyers is the city center whereas foreign investors are more focused at the eastern outskirts of Kyrenia, namely Esentepe and Bahçeli.

Kyrenia On The Map

Kyrenia has the longest shoreline facing Turkey directly and the shortest distance to Turkey in the TRNC. Güzelyurt is neighboring to the west, Famagusta to the east, and the capital Nicosia to the south.

If you look carefully at the map, you will find out that Kyrenia is the only city in theTurkish Republic of Northern Cyprus not having borders with Southern Cyprus.

Selvili Tepe being the highest hill of the city, has an altitude of 1023 meters. Selvili Tepe will offer a spectacular sight on those rare days when snowing in Kyrenia every few years for 1 day or so.

Olives, citrus fruits and carob are often grown in Kyrenia.

The population is 33 thousand 207 people according to the 2011 census.

Mayor of Kyrenia: Nidai Güngördü.

kyrenia weather

Kyrenia Weather

Kyrenia has a typical Mediterranean climate.

The weather in Kyrenia is hot and dry in summers and has short winters.

The winter climate is mild and gentle. You can easily enjoy up to six hours of sunshine, with temperatures as high as 16 degrees and rarely below 5 degrees. Most rain falls in the winter, but with less than 500mm falling in the coastal area, you are unlikely to get wet.

Expect to get spoilt by clear blue skies, endless sunshine, and temperatures that are definitely hot! The textbook definition of a Mediterranean Summer..

Remember to bring plenty of high factor sunscreen and after-sun lotion and make sure your accomodation has well functioning air conditioning. Light clothing, a smart outfit for a night out at the casino or dinner at Kyrenia Harbour and your favourite beachwear is the only essential clothing you need.

Do check out the temparatures if you are planning a vacation in Summer though, if you have high blood pressure. Maybe a visit in Autumn or Spring would be more suitable for you.

The Five Finger Mountains burst into bloom in spring, with wild flowers carpeting their rocky slopes. There is plenty of sunshine in May,  temperatures are lovely and you should only need a jacket for dinner.

Many visitors say that autumn is their favourite time for Kyrenia; the school kids have gone home, the weather is balmy, the sea is lukewarm and the whole country seems to relax from the hassle of summer.

kyrenia transport

Transportation to Kyrenia

Transportation to Kyrenia

Kyrenia is a city neighboring Nicosia, Güzelyurt and Famagusta.

With its hotels, casinos, beaches and entertainment centers, it attracts visitors from all over the island every day of the year.

As in the whole of Cyprus, traffic flows from the left in Kyrenia. The steering wheel is on the right.

Transportation to Kyrenia

Although the use of public transportation is not very common in Northern Cyprus, there are buses and minibuses from many places departing from and to Kyrenia.

There are two options to come from Famagusta to Kyrenia. You can drive to Kyrenia via Nicosia. This road is an average of 76 kilometers.

The second option is to use the Kyrenia Mountain Road turning right from Erülkü Supermarket, passing the Değirmenlik area and arriving at Kyrenia town center.  This road is a few kilometers shorter, but be careful as it is a mountain road and is used by heavy load vehicles.

You can use public transportation to travel between Kyrenia and Famagusta as well.

There are many minibus companies offering services for your trip between Nicosia and Kyrenia. Kombos minibuses are preferred by those who want a faster and more comfortable journey.

The average distance between Kyrenia and Nicosia is 23 kilometers. Should you prefer to use the Kyrenia Ring Road, you should pay attention to the radars. If you are coming down from the Kyrenia Mountain Road, be cautious about the bends.

There are two routes for those traveling between Güzelyurt and Kyrenia. The first one is to pass through the mountain road to Lapta in the west and approaching downtown Kyrenia from Lapta.

The second is to use the Güzelyurt Nicosia dual carriage way and take a turn to the left to Kyrenia at the Nicosia Gonyeli roundabout.

The distance between Girne and Güzelyurt is 50-55 km. The arrival time from both routes is between 40-50 minutes.

Pay attention to your speed on the dual carriage way and the bends on the mountain road.

If you decide to use public transportation, please check the hours of service during your entire transportation process to Kyrenia. Alternatively, you can rent a car from one of the Cyprus Rent A Car companies or you can decide for comfortable journey by taxi.

Kyrenia Shopping Malls

There is no shopping center craze in Kyrenia like in Turkey. Only 1 small shopping mall, Girne Park AVM, operates in Kyrenia.

Of course there are many stores in all corners of the city to satisfy the shopping hunger.

There is no bargaining here, every product is sold at a fixed price. Mr. Pound, China Bazaar and 1001  Market attract the attention with variety of products and price advantages. They are also among the favorites of tourists for souvenir shopping.

For grocery shopping, Lemar Markets Chain, Metropol, Shah Market and Ileli supermarkets are in demand.

The capital of tourism, Kyrenia, has received many investments in the field of higher education in recent years.

The fact that Kyrenia is on the coastline, the proximity of each region and the hustle and bustle of nightlife are some of the reasons why Kyrenia universities are preferred by students.

kyrenia hotel

Kyrenia Hotels

Kyrenia’s luxury hotels have always been at the forefront of promoting Northern Cyprus. They have been featured in the Turkish tabloid press for many years due to the fact that famous singers took stage at weekends entertaining casino customers and hotel guests. But there are so many more alternatives in Kyrenia when it comes to accomodation in accordance with your wishes and budget.

Until recently options were limited to luxury hotels or family run smaller hotels. Nowadays small boutique hotels with flair, short- term rental flats and villas are quite popular.

Not only individuals but construction companies as well offer short term rentals in their housing projects mostly through Airbnb or similar platforms.

Kyrenia city hotels are available in different classifications and being in the center they offer easy access to transportation. The Colony, Les Ambassadeurs, Lord’s Palace and the Rock’s Hotel are the most popular downtown 5-star hotels.

Other 5-star hotels are to be found in the western and eastern outskirts of the city providing access to private beaches. They all promise unique, unforgettable Kyrenia holidays with their sumptuous structures, private beaches and unlimited entertainment opportunities.

Perhaps the most known of Kyrenia hotels are the investments of the Merit Hotels Group, owned by Net Holding. The group runs 4 hotels in Kyrenia and is getting ready to open the fifth.

The fact that hotels in Kyrenia are so busy contributes to the employment.  Hotels offer job opportunities to thousands of employees.

kyrenia casino

Kyrenia Casinos

Kyrenia is the capital of gambling as well as holidays in Northern Cyprus.

The demand is more than you can imagine, to that extend that gamblers from China are recently seen on the scene.

It’s hard to imagine but sadly true that there are casino guests who come to Cyprus for years but never have been in any other place than the airport and the hotel.

They are picked up from Ercan Airport by private vehicles and spend time at the hotel’s casino until it’s time for departure.

Because of their passion for gambling, many get interested to investigate the Kyrenia real estate advertisements and subsequently do invest in Kyrenia housing projects.

Those who rent a house or stay in city hotels in Kyrenia generally prefer the casinos in the center.

Hotel customers, on the other hand, are gambling either in their hotels where they stay or in other luxury hotels for a night out. International poker tournaments are also on the agenda of renown casinos.

Privacy is a serious matter in the casinos. No photos are allowed and in case of leaking photos the trust of players in the establishment is highly jeopardized.

kyrenia nightlife

Kyrenia Nightlife

The nightlife in Kyrenia offers a high dose of entertainment with its concerts, parties, weddings and celebrations. Luxury hotels in the city are taking the advantage of location in this sense.

The concerts given by famous names at the nightclubs and casinos in the hotels add colour to Kyrenia’s night life.

Bars across town will welcome you, each with their own atmosphere. They vary from the quiet and cosy to the loud and boisterous, and many offer live music or djs at the weekends. Especially Sky Lounge & Bar, serving at the top floor of Lord’s Palace Hotel with stunning views is one of the most popular with social media. Odyssey Club, Cage Club, Tango To Buddha, Chamada Club and Onyx Bar are also among the favorites for partying during summer months.

The scope of restaurants vary from local taverns to fancy international cuisine. Fish Restaurants and kebab houses are obvious choices but far eastern and indian restaurants are also popular.

Unlike many Mediterranean resorts, the restaurants at Kyrenia harbour which serve good food at reasonable prices are not tourist traps, but places where locals like to eat too.

kyrenia night clubs

Festivals

Festivals and outdoor activities held during the summer months are among the organizations that add value to the brand of Kyrenia. International classical music festivals, theater festivals and fairs organized by district municipalities host many famous actors and musicians.

The festival season runs from February  to November and it opened with the Orchid Festival taking place in Lapta. Villages are transformed into a venue of festivities with stalls selling organic produce and cultural memorabilia and display folk dancing.

One of the most popular festivals  is the Olive Festival where the pretty village of Zeytinlik transforms into a focal point of cultural entertainment, close to Kyrenia downtown. Lapta Tourism Festival in June, Alsancak Folk Dance Festival in July, and Kyrenia Art and Culture Festival in August are to be named among festivals in Kyrenia.

The international concerts at the Bellapais Festival, running for over 20 years are centred around the Bellapais Abbey celebrating international classical music in a truly moving atmosphere.

visit kyrenia

Places to visit in Kyrenia

Kyrenia, with its picturesque harbour and adjacent castle, is the “Jewel of Cyprus”. It is an  exquisite town,  which has been founded circa 10th century BC and was one of the original city kingdoms. Its position on the north coast made it the ideal place to develop a harbour, and being only forty miles from the Turkish mainland it was perfectly situated on the trade route.

Bellapais

Little has changed in the the village since it was immortalized in the book “Bitter Lemons of Cyprus” by Lawrence Durrell in the 1950s, writing about his adventures in Cyprus and buying a home in Bellapais, close to Bellapais Abbey. The abbey is certainly a ‘must see’ for visitors to Bellapais, but there is much more to experience here, including ancient crusader paths in the mountains and an excellent selection of restaurants and taverns.

Because of the close proximity to the town center Bellapais has become a prestigious residential area. The English School of Kyrenia is there as well. The private school offering British standart education from kindergarten  to high school is the favourite school  of  the upper class  of all nationalities residing in Kyrenia.

kyrenia harbour

Kyrenia Harbor

Life in the old town in Kyrenia centres around the beautiful harbour, an elegant crescent built by the Venetians in the fifteenth century. Today, the harbour still bounces up and down with fishing boats and touring boats.

The Kyrenia harbour, stretching between the Dome Hotel and Kyrenia Castle is surrounded by restaurants and bars that have been developed from buildings that were once Venetian residences or carob warehouses. The modernisation later has effectively preserved the architectural integrity of the buildings and there are no large flashing neon signs or loud music. These Kyrenia restaurants serve simple but delicious Turkish Cypriot cuisine with the emphasis being on locally caught fish.

After the building of the new commercial port the Kyrenia horbour is often reffered to as the historical harbour.

Kyrenia boat tours are organized from the harbour during the summer months. You only have to take a stroll around the old harbour areas and you will find companies offering daily boat tours very easily. There are some very nice boats of differing sizes and decor too.  They all have open deck space for sunbathing and seated interiors should you feel the urge of escaping the sun.

kyrenia castle

Kyrenia Castle

One of the symbols of Kyrenia is Kyrenia Castle. The castle adjasent to the old Harbour, has Byzantine foundations and was remodelled during Lusignan rule. Later it was strengthened and enlarged with the addition of massive walls and bastions by the Venetians. It guards the tiny harbour as it has done over the last four and a half centuries. Inside the castle you will find the  Shipwreck Museum.

yavuz çıkarma beaches

Yavuz Çıkarma Plajı

The area where Turkish soldiers landed on the island during the Cyprus Peace Operation. So it has a historical meaning. Every year on July 19, midnight boats set out from Turkey come to this beach and made a flag of surrender. Before the TRNC 20 July celebrations, the Dawn Vigil ceremonies are held at Landing Beach.

st. hilarion castle

St. Hillarion Castle

St Hilarion castle stands high in the Kyrenia mountain range, overlooking the Mediterranean and the surrounding areas of North Cyprus. Reputedly it was the inspiration for Walt Disney’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’, and remains one of the best preserved of all the Crusader Castles.

The castle is named after St. Hilarion, a hermit monk who fled from persecution in the Holy Land and lived and died in a cave in the mountains. Later in the 10th century, the Byzantines built a church and monastery there. Along with Kantara and Buffavento castles, St. Hilarion was originally built as a watch tower to give warning of approaching pirates.

bufavento castle

Buffavento Castle

Buffavento stands between St. Hilarion Castle to the west and Kantara Castle to the east. As both of the other castles are visible from Buffavento, it was used to pass signals between them. It is assumed that the castles were built in conjunction during the Byzantine period. The name Buffavento is of Italian origin, meaning “Defier of the Winds”. Serving mainly as a watchtower for pirate raids and a place of incarceration the castle saw rarely fighting.

When the island came under the control of the Venicians  in the 14th century , the castle fell into disuse.

Climbing thousand stairs will take you to the summit of the castle. You will have a spectacular view from there overlooking Kyrenia, Nicosia and Famagusta at the same time. Unfortunately not much else is left from the castle as it has been and is continued to be neglected for centuries.

The Buffavento Restaurant, located at the Kyrenia Arapköy Beşparmak Mountains region, has an entrance directly at the opposite side of the road.

five finger mountain

 Five Finger (Beşparmak) Mountains

The mountain chain is called Pentadactylos in Greek. Beshparmak in Turkish, and Five Fingers in English because of the peak resemling five fingers formed to a fist.

This mountain range is about 170 km in length and has a relatively low altitude of just over 1,000 metres providing  an effective barrier between the Mesaoria Plain and the northern coastline. There are three main passes in the mountain range where most traffic is routed through. There are other tracks as well that take a more circular route and are used by foresters, keen walkers, sheep and goats. The most central of the passes is above Kyrenia near the turning for St. Hilarion. To the west is the Gecitkoy/Camlibel pass, and the one to the east is from Gecitkale.

Nowadays, Mount Besparmak offers some serious hiking in Northern Cyprus, with great views and rough terrain to explore.  In springtime, the Northern Cyprus Kyrenia mountains explode into colour, outpouring with wild flowers. A walk at this time of year fills the eyes with beauty and the nose with delightful scents. In autumn the cooler weather of the Kyrenia Mountainsis preferred for better hiking temperatures.

Bird watching in North Cyprus offers plenty to see in the Kyrenia mountains, especially around the Forest Stations.  Be aware that the locals will be hunting in the same woods on Sundays from October to February.

The area around St Hilarion Castle is ideal for paragliding. You must always fly with an approved company or tour, or you can easily stray into military airspace!

alevkayası

Alevkayası

The average temperature difference of 5 degrees between the city and Alevkayası makes it the meeting point of those who escape from the city center in the summer heat.

Alevkayası is a popular area for picnic. Locals prefer even night picnics there. Especially on May 1st bank holiday, barbecuers flock into there.

It is a dense forested area and the risk of fire always prevails therefore make sure to use barbeques at designated areas and don’t leave without controlling the extinguishing.

alsancak milli park

Alsancak National Park

The idea of the Alsancak National Park Project was first concieved during the local elections in 2015, as a part of the election campaign of current mayor of Alsancak, Fırat Ataser.

The site designated as the national park was a green area of 62 acres under military control. The former military area was opened to public use which in itself was a first. The participatory process involving the GAU Faculty of Architecture and Alsancak Municipality and the development of an ecologically responsive project were important acquisitions for Kyrenia.

The recently opended park has walking paths and offers a serene atmosphere to all guests. Jogging at the park became trendy for locals making use of it in the mornings and at weekends.

lapta walking road

Lapta Walking Trail

If you would like to wander along the seaside without getting wet or sandy, the Lapta trail awaits you.

Although a little neglected, these days the first part was builtwith EU funding and the latter part was funded by Turkey. Whilst enjoying a wonderful walk or run, you might want to take a break at the kiosks at the beginning and the end of the Lapta Walkway.

Zihni’s kiosk is very well visited.

We recommend you to try the shandy or the local drink of Cyprus, Zivania. Zihni is very generous with appetizers served with every order and his hospitality leaves nothing to wish for.

kyrenia babil garden

Kyrenia Babil Gardens

The Gardens of Babylon can be summarized as a corner of heaven in Kyrenia located in the Lapta region. This little miracle is created by Çelen Kamburoğlu, who returned to her hometown in Cyprus after an instant decision whilst working as a lawyer in the UK and devoted herself to the land.

There are many kinds of trees, plants, and presentations of landscape.

There is also a cafe inside the facility. It is especially in great demand for breakfast.  You will not be disappointed of the stylish photos taken during a visit at the Kyrenia Babel Gardens. And if you love cats, this trip will add even more joy to your day.

kyrenia beaches

Kyrenia Beaches

Kyrenia is a coastal city. But sadly, there is no direct access to a beach for people living in the center of Kyrenia.  The closest public beach is in Karaoğlanoğlu followed by beaches in Lapta in the west of the city and Alagadi in the east and beyond.

However, many people who come to Cyprus and live here prefer beaches with facilities to natural public beaches. Therefore, beach clubs are fairly common.

Escape Beach is the name of the business at the  Alsancak 5 mile area. It is operated by Altınbaş Holding. It is one of the popular beaches of the summer months with its location, facilities, activities and large car park.

Cornaro Beach, a  Malpas Hotel establishment, is one of the Kyrenia/ Çatalköy beaches. There is also an elegant restaurant at the ground frequently visited for dinners and celebrations.

Shayna Beach Club is located on the Çatalköy beach and has a restaurant as well. You can dine outside with  sea view or inside by the fireplace. Shayna Beach Club offers fresh seafood every day of the week.

Alagadi Turtle Beach is a popular public beach. It has  the longest sandy beach in the whole of North Cyprus, with wonderfully calming views of the sea and of the magnificent Five Finger Mountains behind. It is also a major site for breeding sea turtles.

The Acapulco Beach Club run by Acapulco Hotel is spotlessly clean and has everything you’ll need for a fun family day out, from sun loungers to water sports, beach bars to showers, snack bars to open air discos at night.

Scuba Diving

The wonderful underwater world of the Mediterranean Sea is best discovered by scuba diving.  With many species of fish, sea turtles, octopus and coral to explore in the crystal clear turquoise waters, scuba diving in Kyrenia is a fantastic way to spend a day or two.  There is even an aeroplane wreck to explore near Kyrenia!
